Moving at the speed of life.

Motion.  The act or process of changing position or place.

Newton's first law of motion states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion, unless acted upon by an external force.

As they so elegantly explain on the physics 4 kids website (physics4kids), "if nothing is happening to you, and nothing does happen, you will never go anywhere. If you're going in a specific direction, unless something happens to you, you will always go in that direction. Forever."

This made me think.  I'm currently building my own personal coaching business.  When I tell people about it they often ask me why someone would hire a personal coach.  Traditionally, I go into an explanation about how coaching has benefited me.  How it has helped me to believe in myself and take action on creating the life I want for myself.  How it has empowered me to show up big in life, etc, etc, etc.

Usually about half way through my explanation I see their eyes glaze over as they disengage with the conversation.  Their mind begins to wander.  "Who's playing hockey on TV tonight?"  "What will I have for dinner?"  I quickly realize I'm not doing a great job of relaying the value of coaching in a way that's meaningful and concrete.

But when I reflect upon Newton's laws of physics, I find an immediate answer.

Many people end up getting "stuck" in their lives.  They may be stuck in a job they don't like or a relationship that isn't working.  Life seems to be in constant motion for them, but it's not the direction they want it to be going.  Other people just don't seem to be going anywhere.  There life has no motion.

In either case our lives can be a metaphor for Newton's first law.  In the absence of an outside force, an object in motion (in this case your life) will continue travelling in the path it's on and an object at rest will stay at rest.  An unfulfilled life is often the result of being unhappy with the trajectory you're on or the feeling that your life is not going anywhere.

Coaching can provide one possible solution to this metaphorical tragedy of physics.  A coach can provide the "outside force" required to change your trajectory of motion or put your motionless life into motion.

It's not that we're unable to recognize these challenges or make these changes on our own, however the reality is we often don't.  Physics agrees with this.  The support of a coach can help create the space we need to re-examine the path we're on and make the changes necessary to move into the trajectory of our dreams.  A coach can help us re-awaken all that is possible for us.

So, where is your motion taking you?
